Maternity Photos Guide

Are you currently pregnant and planning your maternity shoot soon? Are you in the midst of deciding whether you even want to take maternity photos?

Are you struggling to decide what type/theme you would like for your maternity shoot? Do you have somewhat of an idea but unsure how to execute it?

If you answered yes to with of these questions, no worries. I’m not sure why this seems to be a tough task for folks, including myself. Maybe because you (and I) want this special moment in time captured perfectly. So I’ve put together this guide to aid you in your planning process.

Pick a theme.

  • If you don’t have one already, get some inspiration for your photoshoot. Search maternity photoshoot ideas for _____ (mothers, surrogates, blended families, couples, etc.). Pinterest is still one of my go-to places to find inspiration.

  • When looking for inspiration ask yourself: How do I want to best capture this season? What do I want to portray? How has this pregnancy made me feel and how can I express that through photos?

    • Some theme ideas: elegance, mother nature, specific era (60’s, 70’s, etc.), black out, favorite sport, black and white silhouette, denim, all white or even something casual.

Find the right photographer.

  • Looking for a photographer can be daunting if you don’t have someone already in mind. If, however, you have an idea of what you are looking this will help narrow down your searches. Use google, word of mouth or social media to help locate a photographer that’s close.

  • Do your research! Review potential photographers work via their social media or personal website. This will benefit you in the long run as it will help you envision your photoshoot and ultimately make your vision come out just right… hopefully.

  • Set a budget and consider what all you want. Consider what packages each photographer offers for the cost.

  • A few things to ask when connecting with your photographer

    • How long will your photo session be?

    • Will you receive digital copies and/or hard copies?

    • How many images you are able to select?

    • Is there an additional cost for outfit changes?

    • How can they make your vision/theme come to life?

    • Is there a deposit required to lock in session?

Choose your outfit(s).

  • Deciding what to wear is matter of expressing yourself. Enjoy this portion of planning. This is the perfect opportunity to play “dress-up” and tap into your creativity.

  • Similarly to the theme, use social media or google to assist in finding your inspiration.

  • Don’t forget to consider how you want to wear your hair and make-up. What shoes you will wear and what type of accessories you need to birth your photoshoot vision.

Determine location.

  • Do you want indoor, outdoor or portraits style photos? This is something you can discuss with your photographer if you aren’t sure.

  • Consider which location(s) will fit best with your theme?

Pick a date and book your session!

  • Depending on how your pregnancy is going I’d suggest waiting until your belly is potentially it’s largest without worrying about going into labor - roughly around 8 months. If you have health concerns or carrying twins you may want to look at the end of 7 months in case you deliver early.

  • Schedule a date and time that works for both you and your photographer and prepare for this fun milestone.
