7 questions to consider before buying a gift for HIM

If your man is anything like mine, asking him to provide gift ideas is nearly a pointless question. Whenever I ask, I’m typically told “I don’t want anything” or (my favorite) “I have everything I need”. Little do they realize how hard this makes it when we want to honor them with a little something special. Well, you’re in luck! Here you’ll find the questions I consider that guides my decisions on what to gift my hubby. I also share a few practical gifts that I’ve given him in the past which he still uses today.

  1. What was the last gift you got him/ what did you get last year?

These questions are interchangeable if you don’t want to repeat a gift too soon. Recycling gift ideas may happen, especially over a lifetime together, however this will help aid in gift variety. This question is also helpful to evaluate how good (useful) the gift was. You can determine how good a gift was by considering the following questions: Does he still use it? Was it good quality? How soon will it need to be replaced? Is there a spin off or remake that could be done?

2. Is there a gift theme you can plan around?

Gift themes are great! It makes life sooo much easier. Themes help focus in on one specific idea. It’ll then give you flexibility to be as creative as you wish. Have you seen gift baskets with specific themes (toolkit supplies, bath items, camping supplies, movie night supplies, etc). Same concept here. Pull together some odds and ends related to a given theme. You’ll then have a thoughtful gift on your hands.

4. What is something useful?/ What will inspire him?

Now remember, you know your man best! Explore his hobbies and desires. This will help provide other options from his many interests. So think through his everyday routine. Reflect on previous conversations where he expressed ideas he is currently pondering. As you reflect on him, ask yourself: What would make his day simpler in any way? What is something he needs to better organize himself? What’s something that can motivate or inspire him? What’s something that can help him reach a goal - no matter how big or small?

5.Is there something he really needs?/ Is there anything that could be replaced?

This is a rather simple question depending on what type of gift you are considering. His needs could be, new socks to replace the ones with holes. Maybe he needs more everyday toiletries like shaving cream, razors, a tooth brush, a du-rag, etc. These items are great for filling a gift basket, by the way. Also consider things like weather changes. Does he need new sweaters or tank tops. You get the point, right? You are exploring what’s missing from his personal inventory and looking for something you can add to enhance it.

6. What’s something corny he’d appreciate?

When considering a gift that is simple or could make him laugh think of something that fits his personality. What are some inside jokes between you two? Does he have any annoying little sayings that you could turn into a hat or shirt? Even looking for hubby/daddy swag is something they’d never really ask for but would wear with honor. For my hubby, whenever he doesn’t feel like doing his hair he will throw on a hat. To celebrate his first Father’s Day, I gifted him a “best day ever” hat. It wasn’t a big gift but he greatly appreciated it. It’s one of his favorite hats.

7. How much do I want to spend?

Setting a budget is always helpful. Like anything budgets put parameters around what to plan for. Keep in mind whatever budget you set as you explore gift options.
